What is the GeoAPI

The GeoAPI allows the integration in web pages of geospatial information and functionality provided by the ACT. The GeoAPI integrates the ExtJS, GeoExt and OpenLayers libraries. You can use these libraries when you use the GeoAPI.

How can the GeoAPI be used

The GeoAPI can be used to include web mapping functionality on your own website. You can show for example your building location, include public transport routing functionality, overlay other layers of information from the geoportail or external geodata. The usage of the GeoAPI and its geodata is governed by API Terms of Use and Data License, which can be found here: termsofuse

What are the benefits of using the GeoAPI

The GeoAPI and its data layers offer many advantages over other web mapping solutions such as Google, Bing … :

What geodata layers are available

In principle, all data layers available through the geoportail.lu are available through the GeoAPI. For a complete list of layers, please refer to the Layers List. A set of services are also available.

What is a Web Mapping Service

A Web Map Service (WMS) is a standard protocol for serving georeferenced map images over the Internet that are generated by a map server using data from a GIS database. The specification was developed and first published by the Open Geospatial Consortium, and you can find more information about the standard on their page.

What is a Web Feature Service

A Web Feature Service (WMS) is a standard protocol for serving geodata over the Internet from a GIS database. The specification was developed and first published by the Open Geospatial Consortium, and you can find more information about the standard on their page.

What are the technical restrictions of the GeoAPI

The GeoAPI has been tested in the following modern browsers: Firefox 3+, Internet Explorer 7+, Chrome 5+, Safari 4+. It has not been designed nor tested for use on mobile based browsers.

Where can I find more documentation about the API

The wiki is the first and best source of information relating specifically to the GeoAPI. More generally, the API code is composed of various based libraries, for which you can find information on their respective websites:

In order to optimize the size of the library, not all code from the aforementioned libraries has been integrated in the GeoAPI. If you use a function that is not part of the GeoAPI, you’ll need to link the appropriate source code yourself.

Is there a forum or a mailing list

Not at the moment but feel free to contact the GeoPortail team at the ACT for help and support.
